The theme of "struggling," or resisting defeat is seen throughout the text of the Old Man and the Sea. Santiago resists bad luck, the power of the ocean, and the will of a great fish. He struggles against the worst of odds and never gives in until he has accomplished what he set out to do, but accomplishments mean nothing when the journey hasn't ended and sharks more willful than yourself destroy your goal. And yet, Santiago's response is “a man can be destroyed but not defeated.” In other words, a man can struggle, but he cannot defeat his fate.
