how did santiago suffers martyrdom?

In the most specific definition, a martyr dies for something he or she believes in. However, obviously Santiago does not die, yet he does lose everything he was so hopeful about. His reputation, his hope for the future, and his belief in his fishing abilities are all killed when the sharks take his fish. I am not sure this is martyrdom, but certainly the boy believes him and will continue to support him in the future.
