SAntiago loves the fish. At points in the story he doesn't feel worthy of such a majestic creature. He even ponders sacrificing his own life. The Fish is majestic, strong and graceful. The fish reminds Santiago of what he used to be as well the fish is a metaphor for Santiago's beautiful mistress which is the sea itself.
