Santiago's age is the underlying motif that drives most all the themes in this story. Please check out the GradeSaver themes page below. In each theme, Santiago's old age becomes the motivating factor. The theme of manhood, for example, is dealt with. Certainly Santiago was a strong specimen of a man in his youth. As he ages, he feels his strength and manhood slip away.
