Santiago had his own personal world where natural elements were both friend and foe. Certainly, the boy Manolin can be considered a friend, even a disciple of sorts. Santiago considered fish as his friend: “The fish is my friend too” (22). In his dream, he often dreamed about lions which might be related to his background. Thus, the old man seemed to have a strong relationship with animals as well as nature. Old age and scavenger animals like the dreaded sharks who feasted on his Marlin were his enemies. The sea itself, depending on her mood, could be friend and enemy.
