Critics have divided the story The old man and the sea into three parts. Explain them.
At 27,500 words, The Old Man and the Sea was too long to be considered a short story. Although the three parts merge into each other through flashback, the reader gets some continuity. The introduction or exposition involves Santiago's failure as a fisherman in recent months and the devotion of Manolin the boy. Part one involves the first section of action. Santiago is pulled into deep water after hooking the great marlin. Part two involves the struggle and capture of the marlin. Part 3 involves the lashing of the dead marlin to the small skiff and the eventual shark attack.
