Are his perceptions concerning Joe DiMaggio realistic?
I think realistic is subjective here. Hemingway was more concerned with personal myth and spiritual clarity. Dimaggio meant something larger than life to the old man making the idea of the player as realistic as Santiago's aching bones and isolation. Santiago derived meaning from Dimaggio giving him strength to take on the great fish: like one last home run before the dark tunnel.
