But Santiago is often seen as a Christ figure. As was Christ ,he is wounded on both his left and right hands, as was Christ. Some argue that the boat is Santiago’s cross. The blood on his face, his moments of near-despair, the bitter taste of the dolphin he eats, his stumbling five times while carrying the mast up the hill, even his strange sleeping posture—face down, arms out, palms up—complete the identification.
