what are the principals involved throughout the novel?
I'll go with your first question. The external conflicts would be the sea, the great marlin, and Santiago's age. Now, much of those conflicts translate to internal conflicts. These struggles combined makes this one of the most famous novella's of our time. Santiago's experiences on the sea, his age and his one great battle define the old man, they are inseparable.
