What is the most Tragic event in the Novel?

I would say when the sharks eat the great Marlin. They not only eat the fish Santiago caught, they destroy the old man's redemption and identity. The Marlin was Santiago's resurrection, his chance to prove he was a viable man and fisherman.

I've always felt the most tragic event in the novel was the marlin being eaten by the sharks....... Santiago accomplished what he intended to accomplish by hooking the fish, but he had never intended for the great and beautiful fish to be desecrated by the sharks as fish food. Sabtiago respected and loved the fish, and he would have given anything for the marlin to have retained its dignity. Santiago equated the marlin's loss of dignity with his own.
