The Open window is a story that shocks the reader?

I think the story is meant to shock the reader by Mr. Nuttel's reaction to Vera's story. Vera's story is entirely fiction but Mr, Nuttel's frayed nerves sends him into a panic. Most readers can pick up on the fact that Vera's story is rather unreliable.
