why did framton believe the story told by vera?

Framton was already on edge. He was a nervous man who was prone to crumble under stressful situations. The whole visit to the country was to sooth his jangled nerves. Vera's gothic tale is told with the sincerity of a child, who knows how to tell tall tales, and Framton believes her.
