He is, from the beginning, aware that he will be one of the outcasts based on his winning in poker. He lives by the calmness that sometimes one is dealt a good hand and sometimes one gets a bad hand. He is philosophical and tries to lead the outcasts with the calm he would use when trying to bluff in a poker hand. On the other hand, he seems to be beginning to feel that fate has finally caught up with him and that his time has run out. He wants to choose his own end and yet his choice of suicide seems almost cowardly.
