Darry is is a Greaser. He is respected among Greasers. The Socs also seem to respect Darry as well but are still willing to fight him. Darry has a past with Socs he used to play football with. Darry used to play football with Paul Holden. They were fiends but Paul isnow a Soc and they face off against each other in the final rumble. Being a Greaser or a Soc gets in the way of natural friendships. I'm not sure about your last question. I imagine a kid like Ponyboy would like both the Beatles and Elvis.
