are the greasers gang members? outsiders? or social groupies? Why ?

Based on the definition of "gang" in the novel's setting; they would be considered a gang. They have assigned themselves the roles of outsiders, and social groupies? No, that would miss the point. We're talking about a far different world here..... not the gangs we see on the news.
