When it was published, The Outsiders was controversial because of its portrayal of gang violence, delinquency, underage drinking and smoking, and strong language. It was ranked #38 on the American Library Association's 'Top 100 most Frequently CHallenged Books of the 90s,' and has even been banned in some schools.
