chap.4 why did johnny behave uncharacteristically violent way?

This is because Two Scocs, David and Bob, begin taunting Ponyboy and Johnny. Pony spits at them and it turns out violent. Pony fights as best he can but is being drowned in a fountain. Johnny kills Bob because he fears for Pony's life.
