I think that Pony appreciates life much more. He sees his best friend die which devastates him. He also feels good about saving lives. He begins to see the folly of violence and hate. I think Pony will come out of these challenges much wiser and empathetic. Instead of rejecting Darry, like in the beginning of the story, he learns just how much Darry loves him. Pony is more empathetic to what Darry is going through. Pony also changes from a very divisive view of socs to a more holistic view of socs. Pony realizes that "things are tough all over". He understands that socs have their own pressures and that, in many ways, Greasers have an easier time socially.
