I can't say it's obvious that she was sixteen when she wrote the Outsiders. This novel is really a young adult classic. I certainly could not weave a story like this full of strong characters and style at any age. The characters are vivid and relatable to many people. Although the reader may not be a "Greaser" or "Soc", the reader can certainly recognize teenage angst in the 1950's context of the novel.
