how are pony dally and johnny get heroes

I think you are referring to the fire in the church. Johnny and Pony go into the flaming church to save the kids. Both risked their lives; Johnny gave his life. They were considered "heroes" after that. Dally certainly played a part as well. He drove them up to the church and was right outside the church.
