How do the events of the fire and the rumble affect Ponyboy? Does everything go back to normal? How do things change?

I  think that Pony appreciates life much more. He sees his best friend die which devastates him. He also feels good about saving lives. He begins to see the folly of violence and hate. I think Pony will come out of these challenges much wiser and empathetic.
