How does Pony's dreaming, or lying to himself, finally work in chapter 10?

In Chapter Ten, Ponyboy doesn't just imagine that Johnny is still alive.... he really believes it.

"..... this time my dreaming worked. I convinced myself that he wasn't dead." This of course doesn't work, Johnny is still dead.
