How would you define the meaning of "outsider" from the story? Who do you think is the true outsider of the story?

The Outsiders are the greasers in the story. They exist outside main stream society. They are seen by many as hoodlums or criminals. When Johnny and Ponyboy rescue the children from the burning church, the community is shocked that greasers were capable of such concern and bravery. I think much of the story is concerned with the core family of the Curtis boys and Johnny. All are seen as outsiders but I think we get a closer look at Ponyboy, the protagonist, than anyone else. He muses about what it means to be from the wrong side of the tracks and how sunsets look just as good to him as they look to a Soc. on the "right" side of the tracks.
