I think a hero can mean different things in various contexts. Certainly the boys didn't think about their own safety as they rushed in to save the kids. Certainly they are heroes because they risked their lives for others. Greasers, and kids in general, often think of themselves first but Johnny and Pony rose to the occasion.
IA hero is somepone who puts others before themselves no matter the personal cost. A hero does the right thing, period.
