Why did Two-Bit say “I know you’d never use it” in reference to the broken bottle in chapter 3?

When the Socs confront them, Two-bit breaks a bottle and hands it to Pony. This was only for appearances. Two- bit knows it is not in Pony's nature to actually cut anyone.
