why do you think dally would have wanted to die

Dally took care of Johnny like a little brother. Dally had great empathy for Johnny. Both never knew the security of a functional family. Johnny was a gentle counterpoint to Dally's rage. Dally projected his good emotions on to Johnny. When Johnny dies, Dally can no longer accept his world.
