why did these three young men feel that they could not go after their dreams alone?

Basically these were young men grew up in a community of violence, ignorance, and failure. There were so many temptations everywhere. Drugs, gangs, crime, dropping out of school....were all temptations. They needed each other for support if they were going to make their pact work.
