Kino wants to educate his child. He wants new clothes for both himself and his wife. Kino also wants a gun. THese make sense in the context of Kino's world. THese are the things that poor men dream of. These ambitions are difficult to accomplish because they break the age old social order of things. There are men above Kino who will refuse to let Kino have his Pearl or change his lot in life.
