Men like Kino, in this cultural context, are strong and stubborn. In many ways Kino represents most men. Kino is the central character of the story, an everyman' who finds himself becoming increasingly violent, paranoid and defiant as he faces opposition from others after he finds the pearl, and resorts to assaulting Juana and murdering those who threaten him. Kino is fiercely proud and lets his passions get in the way of the practicalities and realities of his situation.
