When Juana wants to dispose of the pearl, Kino has not yet realized the evil that the pearl embodies. She says he has "murder" in his heart, but she accepts that. However, he realizes that his treatment of her is misdirected. Any behavior toward the other thieves is more self-preservational, more "rational" in the sense that someone is actually trying to hurt Kino and his family when they try to steal the pearl.
