Juan Thomas adds an external calming feature to Kino's life and family. Juan Thomas and his wife seem the only people Kino and Juana can trust. I'm unsure exactly what you are asking here by " function in this emergency of Juan Thomas". Juan Thomas understands the role the Pearl is playing. He knows it is not a good omen. JUan thomas shelters KIno after Kino kills a man and provides him with sober council.
