KIno lives in a very rural Mexican coastal village. They live very primitively in brush huts, Across the brush fence were other brush houses, and the smoke came from them too...." Simple fires provide heat, cooking and a sense of safety. Within the village, chickens, pigs and various other animals can be found. Although very poor, there is a sense of contentment in Chapter 1. They seem to have the essentials in life. Kino wakes up and hears the "Song of the Family" in his head. To be sure the villagers must work hard to simply survive but it seems to be a contented life.
