The people of the Gulf are poor simple people. They are at the mercy of the town's folk with everything from religion to doctors to the selling their pearls. There is a natural order to this relationship that is disturbed when Kino refuses to sell his Pearl for so little money. This disturbance in order leads to violence. Kino isn't allowed to have power and sadly his boy, the real pearl of his life, is killed.
