I believe the most symbolic of the moral overtones is Steinbeck's depiction of family. The Song of the Family, the protective father, loving wife, cherished child. Happiness that is complete, and yet, happiness that is precarious when faced with outside forces. A perfect world that can so easily be destroyed.
