Kino's people needed to gain status in the world and could do that with Kino as their role model if he sold the pearl and acquired wealth that they would like to model. He also could be the first to have goals that none of the others like Kino could hope to accomplish: marriage in the church, education for his son, a rifle for himself. They all wanted such examples of moving " up" in the world.
