how are kino and juana ignorant about the effect of their discovery on the town?

I don't think they are aware of the extent of gossip that is going on between their friends and neighbours. Certainly their discovery changes the dynamics of their relationships. The actual town is well aware of their discovery and the pearl traders are in collusion to cheat KIno out of the pearl's worth.
