In the text, Steinbeck illustrates the way the lower economic class was exploited by colonialism. One example of this exploitation can be found in the character of the doctor, who refuses to fulfill the expectations of his occupation when people cannot afford to pay him. The doctor serves as a symbol of arrogance and oppression. The doctor's character also illustrates the self-centered mind-set that exposes his own cultural superiority over Kino. The doctor has all the power, and Kino is helpless in the face of his oppressor's ambition.
