Kino's obsession with the pearl leads to strife within his family. Juana believes the pearl to be evil, a portent to disaster and attempts to throw it back into the sea. Kino takes her actions as a direct insult to his manhood, she was no longer the subservient, loving wife. What he didn't realize was that he was no longer the man she married. He was half crazed, and her actions came from her natural instincts and a desire to protect her family.
