Kino's discovery of the “pearl of the world" puts him onto a different road than his fellow villagers. It would seem finding the pearl of such value was fate. He had needed money to help his sick baby but now he had the possibility of great wealth. It, however, was Kino's choice to pursue this wealth. Juan Tomas warned Kino about stepping out of his role as a poor villager. The social ramifications would be swift and heavy. Still, Kino did what most men would do: he tested his fate but loses in the end.
