What does the pearl symbolize if kino threw it back because he was mad and frustrated?
At the end the Pearl symbolizes greed of mans' heart, it is the "song of evil."
I personally do not think rage or frustration were the reasons. By the end of the novel, when Kino has lost everything important (his son Coytotito), there is not much else for him to live for. He is frustrated because he wanted something he did not get, but there is little left for him. The Pearl has no value because he cannot get education for Coyotito, a wedding for Juana, or even the rifle he wanted so badly. The Pearl symbolizes all his lost hopes and dreams, so he has nothing left for his future.
