The pearl
Kino and his people are poor: they have been subjugated for generations. Europeans have come and built stone houses and permanent towns while Kino's people live in huts made of grass subsisting on what they catch and hunt. Kino can never realize the wealth from his pearl because European society will not let him. Kino's pearl upsets the balance between European control and indigenous subjugation.
