Kino initaily saw all of his dreams in the surface of the pearl. He saw a rifle for himself, a church wedding, and and education for his son. In the final chapter, each of Kino's dreams is shadowed by the reality of his situation. The rifle would be gotten through death, the church wedding was replaced by the fear and tragedy he saw in Juana's face, and the son he wished to see educated was sick unto death with the poison administered by the greedy doctor.
