This means that Kino was being driven by some instinct deep inside of him. He is aware that the trackers are after his family and his precious Pearl. Like an animal he is hyper-aware and ready to defend. Kino's obsession with his pearl brings out his baser insincts.There is a primal feeling protection that Kino has for his pearl.
