At first, Kino and Juana have similar dreams of what the pearl can afford them, how it can make their lives better. As the story progresses, the pearl becomes a danger to the entire family. Kino won't accept that what he believed would better the family is tearing them apart. Juana sees the changes clearly and wants Kino to get rid of the pearl. She is more interested in the family's safety than dreams of what "could be."

Juana believed the pearl to be evil and she wanted it destroyed, but Kino could see nothing but the money it would bring.

"This thing is evil," she cried harshly. "This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us," and her voice rose shrilly. "Throw it away, Kino. Let us break it between stones. Let us bury it and forget the place. Let us throw it back into the sea. It has brought evil. Kino, my husband, it will destroy us."
