Hi there! Yes, it was a singular Steinbeck ending to the story. The main theme involves the dark power of greed that the peal commands over mans' heart. Kino can't let go of his "pearl of the world". He pays the price of his infatuation with his real pearl, his infant son. This sense of anguish and loss is juxtaposed with the fact that Kino still has his pearl but the pearl is now meaningless.
