What did Kino finally do with the pearl at the end? Was it a wise decision?

Kino throws the pearl back into the ocean. We can infer that this was a wise decision, as the pearl had brought Kino and Juana nothing but heartache.... Kino's dreams of what the pearl could afford him cost him the life of his son.
