Kino's sense of outrage, the murder, and his subsequent fear of being tracked cause him to be weak.... he is afraid, and to Kino, fear makes one not a man. Juana's encouragement and wise words make Kino think.... he calms himself down, faces the reality, and once again.... he sees himself as a man.
Kino drew a great breath and fought off his weakness. "No," he said. "You are right." And his will hardened and he was a man again.
