What effect has the pearl hard on the town and it's people?

In the final chapter of the story, the townspeople react as if Kino and Juana return with something to be feared. Whether it was the pearl itself, or the parents who arrived carrying the lifeless body of their infant child is hard to say. None-the-less, eyes were averted and shades were drawn; greetings were withheld and a path was made.

And as they walked through the stone and plaster city brokers peered at them from barred windows and servants put one eye to a slitted gate and mothers turned the faces of their youngest children inward against their skirts.
