After the doctor left, Kino wrapped the pearl in a rag and dug a hole in the dirt floor where he concealed the pearl. When the doctor returned, he gave Coyotito water with ammonia and said that he would get well. Kino then told the doctor that he would pay him once the pearl was sold, something the neighbors reiterate when they tell the doctor that Kino has found the Pearl of the World..... that he will be a rich man. The doctor then told Kino to keep the pearl in his safe, but Kino said it was secure. Knowing that Kino would look to the place where the pearl was stored, he watched Kino's eyes move to the corner where he had buried it. Later that night, Kino thought he heard noises in his hut. He quickly grabbed his knife and struck out in the dark, and the person scurried away.
