I think the irony is in the baby Coyotito. Kino holds on to the Pearl to make a better life for him. He wants to educate his son. Somewhere the value of the Pearl and his child get mixed up. KIno's real pearl as symbolized by his child is killed and Kino is left with his shiny pearl, now a symbol of greed and the death of his child. Does that make sense?
